Total Film: Inception Analysis.

This cover features some very clever effects, distortation of the seemingly real city scape coupled with the masthead being integrated with the background image creates an original and interesting front cover.

Blues, reds and whites are predominantly used, cold, sexy and violent colours being used to market one of the biggest films of the year. The cover is very well balanced, the centre of the page looks as if its the anchorage point for all of the cover lines, title and image to hang around. This makes it non confusing and aesthetically pleasing. The lighting on DiCaprio's face suggests there is a dark side to his character, maybe even two sides; and as I've seen Inception I can say he has got a dark side, so this was probably a deliberate tool.

The metallic tinge of some of the bigger coverlines suggests a cold eerie thoughts.

Empire: Transformers analysis.

This cover, much like the EMPIRE magazine featuring Tron: Legacy has been on the whole created by special effects. This cover now being 4 years old, its easy to take note of the fact that it looks pretty dated. In recent years covers have been becoming on the whole more minimalistic and clean, where as this has a lot going on, and a lot of information to take in.

The blues and reds match Optimus Primes "paint job" which make an effective link between the magazine and the film.

The fonts being used are classic empire, sticking to the house style.

Empire Analysis.

This cover of EMPIRE is dedicated to the 2010 release of Tron: Legacy, much like Sight and Sounds, the theme and colour scheme of the front cover changes with the film they are featuring on the cover.

The luminous neon blues and yellows connote a modern twist, and the changing of the masthead to some kind of strange Neon mesh adds a slight modernism to the magazines usually quite uniform masthead. Not much can be said about the lighting, but the effects being used to create this cover are quite hefty. Digitization of images such as this is becoming more popular due to technological advancements.

As well as being modern and "fresh" the colours seem to work for eachother, making the whole cover look clean, modern and different.

Magazine Analysis.

Sight and Sounds have a very distinctive cover masthead, the warm glow of the orange and burgundy text governs the rest of the page. The images are usually full page, with little distraction taking you away from the image.

In this case, the lighting emphasises Tarantino's face, and hand. The text is layed out quite haphazard, but this reflects the film they are advertising in the magazine. Depending on the genre, demographic and other key influences, sight and sound tend to have clear design patterns within their own covers.
