Web 2.0 has increased the potential and accessibility for anyone wanting to produce their own indie productions. YouTube, Blogger, Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr are 5 examples of how social networking can present media texts, a/v productions and a whole variety of other things to literally millions of people. This technology being so easily available to everyone makes it extremely cheap and easy for independent film makers and people with a low budget to market their films virally, or with just adverts on sites like Facebook. Even Facebook groups can address hundreds of thousands of people instantly, and with the emergence of this new tech, there has been a definite increase of low budget productions. (See Paranormal Activity, virally advertised on-line).
Photoshop and Final Cut Pro were the main two platforms for creating and editing film and images. The simplicity and general ease these programs provide people is second to none. Anyone can learn how to use these programmes in a few hours, and spending more and more time on them develops skills, creativity and knowledge. All sorts of effects are achieved, and after all, the professionals do use these exact programs. Although this software can be expensive, it's not 100% inaccessible to people such as ourselves to access them, cheaper alternatives with some of the less specialist tools can be purchased on the internet cheap.
Once you've edited, created and slaved away producing your media it is now possible to upload them straight into the platform you want to market them in, for example, you have finished editing your teaser trailer and instead of waiting for ages for it to be distributed, you can upload the video straight onto YouTube were people can watch them instantly. Now its on YouTube, its possible for people to share the video, put them on Facebook, post them in forums etc etc, this is viral advertising. Its a method we used to our advantage.
With Posters, images and stills its just as easy to share and market. For example, your poster is ready to hit the public, so you upload it to an online blog, website, such as Blogger, Facebook or Tumblr, then people repost the image over and over again. This greatly increases the readership as the scope for literally anyone seeing it is massive. Advertising is getting more and more like this, and you are more likely to see adverts on the internet for Horror films than you are television and in magazines. Not only is it easy to create, but its easy to distribute to other members of your project whilst using the newest tech, it takes seconds to send an email with a lot of information, and you can be literally anywhere in the world to receive or send it.
This technology has been a massive help to me whilst working on this project. The accessibility to programs and platforms to gain knowledge and skills from is an incredibly useful resource. The pure fact that you can download, search, post, copy, paste, read, and upload from ANYTHING to ANYTHING in seconds just proves how much time, money and work can be saved. Photoshop especially has helped me express my creativity, if you go wrong you can rectify the mistakes in seconds, you can create various effects, pre-set or not, and you can add text, lense flare, exposure or pretty much anything you want in order to achieve the effect you wanted. Without this technology I believe it would be impossible for my team and I to recreate the same trailer we produced at the same quality, with our budget of literally £0, and the fact that it costs no money for us to make proves that with even a slight amount more, the amount of potential people have these days to create professional work from gardens, living rooms, bedrooms and whilst they are on holiday.
